Commentary: Sixth, accomplishing the benefits. There are two parts: first, attaining the lesser fruit; twenty thousand devaputras became free from dust and defilement, obtained the purity of the Dharma-eye, and realized the fruit of the stream-enterer (srotāpanna). As fully explained in the commentary (śāstra), later they attained the great stages. Regarding the five hundred devaputras attaining the acceptance in accordance with the Dharma: some say it is the first bhūmi, because they obtain the acceptance that accords with the Dharma of the correct teaching. Some say it is the eighth bhūmi. It is absent in the old translation. Regarding the purity of the Dharma-eye: some say it is the first bhūmi. This contradicts the commentary, because being free from dust and defilement refers to the lesser fruit. Now, according to the orthodox interpretation, the acceptance of the non-arising of phenomena (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti) is attained at the first bhūmi. Now attaining the acceptance in accordance with that is precisely prior to the bhūmis, at the stage of the acceptance among the roots of good (kuśala-mūla), an acceptance at the sāsrava stage, because it accords with the acceptance of wisdom. Alternatively, it is the third, the conforming acceptance (anulomikī kṣānti), among the five acceptances, because the fourth, fifth, and sixth bhūmis conform to the supramundane path.
