Commentary: From here on is the fifth, commanding Maitrāyaṇīputra. First is the command, and later is his refusal. This is the first, the command. 'Maitrāyaṇī' ('Full') is his personal name; 'Compassion' (Maitrī) is his mother's clan name. Because this venerable Full was born of Maitrī, he was named her son. In Sanskrit it is *Maitrāya[ṇīputra]*, which here is translated as 'compassion'. His mother was of the Brahmin caste. In ancient times, there was a ṛṣi who constantly practiced the conduct of compassion (maitrī); following his lineage, they took 'Compassion' as their clan name. His mother had no sons and sought pregnancy everywhere. Later, she dreamed of a precious vessel filled to the brim with jewels placed beside her belly, which suddenly entered her womb. Later she spoke to her husband, saying that it must be a gift from heaven, to be a great precious vessel. Indeed she became pregnant and gave birth to this child. Later, a physiognomist made a divination and accordingly named him 'Full'. When grown up, he could recite the treatises on grammar (vyākaraṇa), and his compassionate conduct was also a fully perfected precious vessel. Later he went forth into homelessness and became an arhat, foremost in debate and eloquence, which is why the Buddha commanded him.
