Commentary: Next is the second [section], the skillful means of benefiting living beings by sharing their status. It contains eighteen phrases, of which four are here: first, dwelling among the secular while maintaining the true rule; second, living as a householder without being defiled by worldly dust; third, having a wife and children without carnal affection; fourth, residing among kin while eliminating discursive thoughts [about them].
The bodhisattva's inherent morality applies equally to the secular and the monastic; the deportment of a monastic is often neglected and violated by secular people. Therefore, he now dwells among the secular, yet constantly maintains the true rule. Householders are generally bound by the three realms; although he lives at home, he is free from the defilement of the three realms. The three realms are the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Because they are the realm belonging to desire, up to the realm belonging to the formless, they are so named, just like "pepper drink" or "diamond bracelet." Because desire exists within the realm, because there is only form within the realm, and because there is no form within the realm, they are called the desire realm and so forth. His wife and children were manifested transformations, and he constantly preserved pure conduct, having no defiled attachment. Although he had family and kin, he lacked discursive thoughts concerning relatives, because he had eliminated all discursive thoughts.
