贊曰：下責不識昔。有二：初明所不識、後明能不識。此初文也。祈，有求也。此新學者，往趣大乘，心求大菩提，未至不退位，中忘是意。如何今者示以小乘？故上經言「勿以穢食置於寶器」。

Commentary: Below, rebuking him for not knowing the past. There are two parts: first, explaining what he did not know; later, explaining his inability to know. This is the first passage. 'Aspiration' means seeking. These newly trained students had formerly directed themselves toward the Mahāyāna, their minds seeking great bodhi; not yet having reached the stage of non-retrogression, they forgot this intention midway. How could you now point out the lesser vehicle to them? Therefore the sūtra above said: 'Do not place defiled food into a precious vessel.'
