贊曰：此釋所由。諸聲聞人非常在定如佛世尊，故不能識諸根勝劣，顯佛恒在定故能識根。識根要由他心智故，他心智起必由定故。

Commentary: This explains the reason. Śrāvakas are not constantly in meditative absorption like the Buddha, the World-Honoured One; therefore they are unable to recognize the superiority or inferiority of faculties. This reveals that because the Buddha is constantly in meditative absorption, he is able to recognize faculties. Recognizing faculties must rely on the knowledge of others' minds, and the arising of the knowledge of others' minds must rely on meditative absorption.
