Commentary: Below, [the text] reveals the exhaustion of his reasoning, first questioning and then revealing. Within revealing, there are again two: first, stating his own affair; second, revealing the other's words. In stating his own affair, first it reveals what he followed, and then it reveals how the other followed. This is the question and the revealing of what he followed. As for 'then entered quiet abiding': in general, there are three abidings: first, noble abiding, meaning the three gates of liberation and the absorption of cessation; the Buddha mostly abides in emptiness and the absorption of cessation. Second, divine abiding, meaning the four dhyānas; the Buddha mostly abides in the fourth dhyāna. Third, brahma abiding, meaning benevolence, compassion, joy, and equanimity; the Buddha mostly abides in great compassion. Now, 'quiet abiding' means abiding in emptiness or the absorption of cessation, abiding supported by the fourth dhyāna; hence it is called 'quiet abiding.'
