The Commentary says: From this point onward is the eighth [disciple], appointing Upāli. First is the appointment, and then the declining words. This is the appointment. The Sanskrit name is Upāli, which here translates as 'Near Attendant' (Jinzhi). When the Buddha was a prince, he was a close minister handling government affairs, hence 'near attendant'; that is, an official guarding the storehouse. When the Śākyas left the household life, they left the garments, jeweled crowns, and elephants they used, giving them all to him. Later, he reflected: 'Even the noble and wealthy Śākya sons have abandoned everything to leave the household life. What kind of person am I, that I should still remain?' He hung the crowns on trees, tied the elephants between the trees, and made a vow, saying: 'Whoever takes them, I shall offer them as a gift.' He went to where the Śākya sons were and explained in full his reasons for coming. The Śākya sons were all delighted, and they came to address the Buddha: 'Please ordain him first, to be our senior elder, so that we may abandon our arrogance and respectfully serve him.' The Buddha granted this. When the Śākya sons paid homage and prostrated to Upāli, the great earth shook. A voice in the sky praised from afar: 'The mountain of conceit of these princes has collapsed! Yielding their own status to honour what was previously low, they now bow to humble feet.' Because he is the foremost upholder of the Vinaya, he is appointed now.
