3.39

贊曰：此有四句，一誼靜咸能益、二理斷巧能平、三法筵訓大乘、四席問教初學。市演衢靜，觸處濟生也。西方斷事，委在平直之人，故為群生理諸王家之務，恐有枉曲，以損生故。餘二可知。

Commentary: Here there are four phrases: first, both busy and quiet places were able to bring benefit; second, in judicial settlement he was skillfully impartial; third, at the Dharma banquet he instructed in the Mahāyāna; fourth, from his teaching seat he instructed beginners. Delivering discourses in markets or quiet crossroads, he succored living beings wherever he went. In the Western Regions, settling disputes was entrusted to fair and upright persons; hence he managed royal affairs for the multitude, fearing there might be injustices that would harm living beings. The remaining two are understandable.
