3.41

贊曰：此有二句，一處欲勸超染、二遊倡令念知。令彼正念正知，不因伎樂業妄憶邪解故。舊云「入諸酒肆，能立其志」，酒肆多有絃歌，立志令正知念也。文雖有異，意會可知。

Commentary: Here there are two phrases: first, dwelling amidst desire to exhort transcendence of defilement; second, mingling with entertainers to cause them to have mindfulness and awareness. He caused them to maintain right mindfulness and right awareness, not generating false recollections or erroneous views on account of their profession of musical entertainment. The old [translation] says: "Entering taverns, he was able to establish their resolve." Taverns often feature singing and stringed instruments, and establishing their resolve means causing them to have right awareness and mindfulness. Although the texts differ, their intended meaning is harmoniously understood.
