The Commentary says: This is the third iteration. ‘Grasping’ means clinging and taking; taking the self as the root, defilement arises. If one does not grasp at a self and fully understands non-self, its nature is pure. Since you [monks] were defiled, it is evident that you grasped at a self. This reveals the reason why those two individuals had defilements. The preceding part led them to know the ultimate truth so that the stain of transgression would naturally be eliminated. The following part explains that knowing conventional truth makes it easy to bring transgressions to an end, just as knowing the circumstances of a thief makes it easy to capture and defeat him.
