The Commentary says: This is the fourth level, explaining that the conventional is created by the mind, like the moon in water. In the water there is truly no moon, yet the mind falsely supposes it to be there, not understanding that taking the water as a condition, one only sees the original moon. All conventional phenomena are created by the mind; not understanding one's own mind, one supposes that external objects exist. The image in a mirror likewise has no real image; taking the mirror as a condition, one merely sees one's original face. What is grasped by the mind is also like this: not understanding one's own mind, one supposes it exists apart from the mind. If the image in the mirror were truly existent, when the viewer departs why does it not depart? When the observer approaches why does it not approach? Since that mirror-[image] is not real, all conventional things are like this.
