3.51

贊曰：此有三句，明在天尊。梵天居在初定，謂天下而獨尊。今示諸靜慮差別，令知非獨尊故。又在四禪各能為主，未定差別。舊云「誨以勝慧示諸定也」。帝釋在天，多為常想，示諸自在一切無常。護世四王，各領方域，令護一切平等利樂。

Commentary: Here there are three phrases, explaining [his skillful means] among heavenly exalted ones. The Brahmā gods abide in the first dhyāna, thinking they are uniquely honored beneath heaven. He now shows them the distinctions among the dhyānas to let them know they are not uniquely honored. Furthermore, each can be a sovereign in the four dhyānas, without fixed distinctions. The old [translation] says: "Instructing them with superior wisdom, he demonstrated the various concentrations." Śakra in heaven often holds the conception of permanence, so he showed him that all sovereigns are impermanent. The four world-protecting kings each rule a quarter of the world; he caused them to protect all beings with equality, benefit, and peace.
