3.56

問：欲現身權，方便多種，何故今現其身疾也？答：現疾之意，略有十種：一來問疾者因說化故、二希望世尊令問疾故、三顯無始來身皆疾故、四明慈悲心隨生疾故、五為識凡聖病之因故、六令有疾者調伏心故、七令餘下位知非類故、八妙詳高德方能對故、九因與對揚為大利故、十顯如來身威德大故。如下經文，不繁具顯。

Question: In wishing to manifest skillful means of the body, expedient means are manifold; why did he now manifest an illness in his body?
Answer: The intention behind manifesting illness has ten brief aspects: first, to expound and convert because people came to inquire after his illness; second, wishing that the Bhagavat would send someone to inquire after his illness; third, to show that from beginningless time all bodies are ill; fourth, to show that due to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion he fell ill in accordance with living beings; fifth, to make known the causes of illness in ordinary people and noble ones; sixth, to cause those who are ill to subdue their minds; seventh, to make those of lower stages understand that he is not of their kind; eighth, so that only the highly virtuous Mañjuśrī could engage him in dialogue; ninth, because engaging in dialogue with him would yield great benefit; tenth, to manifest the greatness of the majesty and virtue of the Tathāgata's body. As shown in the sūtra text below, it will not be elaborated in detail here.
