Commentary: Below are five distinct similes. "Like a dream" means that just as what is seen in a dream is not a real object because it is falsely seen, the body is induced by karma, karma serves as the prototype, and the body is like a shadow. An echo in a quiet valley is not truly existent at all; this sound belongs to the causes and conditions of the place where it originally arose. This body is also like this; it belongs to its original causes and conditions, and does not possess a separate existence now. "Like a cloud" and "like lightning" can be understood from the text. Now, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha has eight similes for the other-dependent nature, and the Prajñā[pāramitā] has nine similes; here there are ten similes. Because the other-dependent nature is unreal, it is established as empty. Because the underlying meanings differ, each relies upon one perspective and they cannot be harmonized.
