Commentary: Below is the contemplation of what is loathsome and defiled. In total there are seven phrases, and here there are two. There are five kinds of impurity: first, impurity of seed, because it is incurred by motivated karma and formed together by the semen and blood of parents. Second, impurity of dwelling, because it relies upon and dwells between the receptacle of raw food and the receptacle of cooked food in the mother's womb. Third, impurity of intrinsic characteristic, because it is formed by the accumulation of the thirty-six substances. Fourth, impurity of common characteristic, because all filth constantly flows from the nine orifices. Fifth, ultimate impurity, because after the body breaks up, it becomes excrement, ash, and the like. Therefore it is said: "Impure and filled with filth." Even if one repeatedly applies various perfumed ointments and bathes it, it will ultimately return to being impure and foul-smelling. This body is frail and perilous; what about it is not impure? An impure object must be false and deceptive, because it returns to destruction.
