Commentary: Below, properly presenting the words. There are two parts: first, taking up the sūtra to express the principle; second, clarifying that the assembly gained benefit at that time. In the first there are again three parts: first, generally taking up the text of the sūtra; second, specifically expressing the principle in questioning; third, concluding with encouragement to reveal the truth, from 'Therefore, Maitreya, do not use this teaching to entice the devaputras' onward. This is the first text. 'Bestowing' (shou) means giving. 'Vyākaraṇa' (ji) means distinguishing, recognizing, or verifying. Personally receiving the prophecy is called 'receiving vyākaraṇa', because receiving means accepting. The Buddha gives him the prophecy, hence it is called 'bestowing vyākaraṇa'. The Buddha bestowed the prophecy upon him in various vinayas and the Ascent Sūtra. Saying 'in one birth' means: setting aside the present body, there is one birth in heaven, hence it says 'in one birth'. The intermediate state (antarābhava) is an expedient means subsumed under heaven, and is not counted among humans. Some say: [the lives] in heaven and the coming [life] among humans are jointly called 'one birth', just as speaking of seven births refers to the two births of humans and gods as great births. 'The Buddha said that Maitreya would be born in Tuṣita, and having exhausted that one life, would attain Buddhahood.' Dwelling in the Tuṣita heaven, he is also called a bodhisattva bound to one birth; it does not mean residing among humans is called one birth. This principle is correct. There are three kinds of bodhisattvas: those bound to one birth, and those in their final body who sit in the bodhimaṇḍa. This asks about the one bound to one birth, not the other two.
