The commentary says: The following challenges the present. First it poses the challenge, and later it provides proof for this challenge. Among present phenomena, that which originally did not exist now exists, and this state of existence is called 'arising'; a momentary pause in the state of arising is conventionally called 'abiding'; the difference between before and after abiding is conventionally posited with the name 'decay'; and when it ceases to exist after this, it is conventionally called 'cessation'. Present phenomena do not possess even a momentary real abiding, nor do they abide continuously over time; therefore it is said that the present has no abiding, though not that it lacks conventional abiding. If there were real abiding, it could serve as a cause and could attain what is to come, and one could receive a prophecy based on it. Since the present has no real abiding that could serve as a cause, based on what could a prophecy be given?
