Commentary: Conditioned dharmas have names that possess function; when expressed through names, their essence and function increase, so they can have name-entities. The true principle is not like this; it is revealed merely by names. Sounds have no function and cannot cause the true essence and function to increase; there is only a provisional designation without any characteristic that is expressed. The older text says 'provisional name,' where the sense is slightly different; it is not like the dependent nature, which can be grasped or abandoned. Just like waves, conditioned things have agitation; the true principle cannot be grasped or abandoned, and hence is called 'waveless.' The older text calls it 'Bodhi is like an illusion'; the phrasing differs, but the meaning is identical.
