Commentary: These three phrases are entirely absent in the older sūtra. The essence and function of abandonment are pervasive, as is well known of the true principle; the function of knowledge is also universal, and therefore it is all-pervading. 'Pervading' (xing) means being present, because the principle is everywhere present. 'Pervading' means arising, because the function of knowledge universally arises. Alternatively, knowledge is also everywhere present, because its nature is unimpeded, and the Tathāgata's saṃbhogakāya is nowhere absent. 'Summit' (uṣṇīṣa/śikhara) means the ultimate, because principle and knowledge are supreme and both reach the ultimate, and among conditioned and unconditioned dharmas they are both foremost, and neither can be defiled by worldly dharmas.
