Commentary: Below reveals the exhaustion of reasons, first questioning, then demonstrating. In demonstrating there are five parts: 1. explaining the encounter and inquiry, 2. explaining his reply, 3. explaining his own cross-examination, 4. explaining his exposition, and 5. concluding with the obtained benefit. This is the questioning and the encounter and inquiry. He was about to leave the city, while the other was just about to enter; meeting and exchanging greetings is the ordinary etiquette for a youth. Inquiring where he came from led to a reply on principle. Maitreya had the appearance of a renunciant, so [Vimalakīrti] bowed his head to him; Prabhāvyūha had the appearance of a layperson, so he paid homage to the other. Although the black-robed and white-robed differ, their virtue and path are equally great. Bodhisattvas were commanded in succession to go, and those of the same rank all declined; their listed virtues and recorded names do not conflict.
