Commentary: Fourth, explaining his statement. This has two parts: first, distinctively revealing the thirty-two kinds of essence of bodhi; second, below from 'Thus, good sons,' concluding that all actions and demeanors are bodhi. The thirty-two kinds are divided into six: the first four are called 'genuine setting forth,' because they are genuine practices proceeding toward the fruit of buddhahood; the next six are called 'pāramitās,' because they are able to bring practitioners to the other shore; the next eight are called 'maturing sentient beings,' because they benefit sentient beings through these eight; the next two are called 'all roots of wholesome qualities,' because through cultivating good and eliminating evil, wholesome roots are fulfilled; the next six are called 'embracing the true Dharma,' because they encompass and comprehend the Buddha's true Dharma; the last six are called 'making offerings to the Tathāgata,' because cultivating Dharma offerings is foremost. When we come to the text, each will be explained accordingly. Traversing this sequence, we explain its rationale. 'Pure' means faithful and solid; 'straight' means genuine and substantial; they make one easy to dwell together with, as they are what is learned at the beginning.
