Commentary: The fourth section below has two items, called 'all roots of wholesome qualities.' Extensive learning being the cause, all goods are fulfilled; thus the sūtra says: 'Extensive learning can induce joy; extensive learning gathers all goods; extensive learning abandons what is meaningless; extensive learning attains nirvāṇa.' The Mahāyānasaṃgraha also states: 'The perfume of extensive learning is the seed of the supramundane mind; thus it can initiate genuine and wondrous practice.' Discipline can extinguish the multitude of evils of the three karmas; when observing in accord with reality, what evil could one commit? Once evil phenomena have perished, wholesome phenomena arise; hence they are called 'roots of wholesome qualities.' Because these two are the causes of bodhi, they are called bodhi.
