Commentary: 3. Not recognizing him and admonishing him. First, general admonition; second, specific admonition. This is the first. The lord of Trāyastriṃśa Heaven is surnamed Śākya, titled Śakra, and named Kauśika. 'Kauśika' translates here as 'cocoon-child,' which was his name in a previous birth. The Buddha constantly addressed him thus; hence [Jagatpāla] also says now, 'Welcome, Kauśika.' The explanation of this origin story is as in the Commentary on the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra. Although you have blessings and merit, you should not be overly self-indulgent, engaging in such theatrical diversions.
