贊曰：下顯他詞。有十八：一顯伏魔相、二示從魔乞、三魔驚欲走、四空聲勸之、五魔以女施、六無垢正說、七天女問法、八無垢為陳、九魔喚還宮、十天女不遂、十一魔轉從乞、十二無垢施之、十三天女請問、十四無垢略答、十五天女復問、十六無垢廣說、十七天女頂禮、十八捨制魔還。或分為二：一釋魔相、二正降魔。此初文也。持世勸化，所言未訖，無垢便釋魔惱，故然嬈惱也。

Commentary: Below shows the words of the other [speaker, Vimalakīrti]. There are eighteen [points]: 1. Revealing Māra's characteristics; 2. Showing his begging [the women] from Māra; 3. Māra, alarmed, wishes to flee; 4. A voice from the sky admonishes him; 5. Māra gives the women; 6. Vimalakīrti's correct exposition; 7. The devīs question the Dharma; 8. Vimalakīrti explains it to them; 9. Māra summons them to return to the palace; 10. The devīs refuse to comply; 11. Māra turns to beg them back; 12. Vimalakīrti bestows them; 13. The devīs ask further instructions; 14. Vimalakīrti gives a brief answer; 15. The devīs ask again; 16. Vimalakīrti explains in detail; 17. The devīs bow their heads in worship; 18. Releasing the constraint, Māra returns. Alternatively, it may be divided into two: first, explaining Māra's characteristics; second, directly subduing Māra. This is the first text. Dharaṇīṃdhara was admonishing and transforming him; before his words were finished, Vimalakīrti then explained that it was Māra's vexation, and that he was indeed causing harassment and annoyance.
