贊曰：下辭有三，此總陳道屈。渠設財會，無規世福。教法施因，令祈出世。道窮理屈，故辭不堪。

Commentary: Below, the declining has three parts; this generally states how his way was overcome. He had arranged a material assembly without seeking worldly blessings; [Vimalakīrti] taught the causes of the Dharma-giving to make them aspire to the supramundane. Since his way was exhausted and his reasoning bent, he declined as incapable.
