Commentary: Distinctly showing the exhaustion of his reasoning. There are two parts: first, raising the question; later, revealing it. Within revealing it, there are two: first, stating his own matter; later, showing the other's words. This raises the question and states his own matter. "Sacrifice" (祠) means prayer. "Assembly" (會) means gathering. Pouring out both wealth and food to pray for supreme results, with the multitude gathering in one place, it is called a sacrificial assembly. Making no distinction between monastic and lay, there were therefore śramaṇas, brahmins, and so forth. Making no choice between orthodox and heterodox, there were therefore non-Buddhists. Making no distinction of poverty or low status, there were therefore the solitary and beggars. Being without parents is called orphan (孤); being without children or younger brothers is called solitary (獨). In his mind he prayed for worldly blessings, so he set a limit of seven days. "Term" (期) means a deadline.
