Commentary: Below is the extensive explanation. There are thirty-two clauses, divided into five groups: first, four practices of the immeasurables; next, six practices of the perfections; next, three practices of concentration; next, nine miscellaneous practices; and finally, ten sequential practices. This is the first group. Speaking of the blissful marks of bodhi to bestow upon sentient beings is called loving-kindness (maitrī), because expounding wisdom and awakening induces great loving-kindness. Explaining the marks of suffering to induce great compassion (karuṇā), pulling sentient beings out of suffering to make them attain liberation, because expounding Nirvāṇa induces great compassion. The older version said: "Through respecting sentient beings," because pulling them from suffering and revering them causes them to be liberated. Desiring that sentient beings' goodness be rejoiced in induces great sympathetic joy (muditā). The older version said: "Through upholding the true Dharma one gives rise to a joyful mind," which should rather be placed under equanimity to bring about detachment. As for "true Dharma," it refers to the Dharma of teaching, principle, and practice. Regarding this true Dharma, one intends to make them embrace it. Furthermore, regarding the correct wisdom of the resultant dharmas, one intends to give rise to great equanimity (upekṣā), making them abandon greed, hatred, and delusion so as to embrace the true Dharma. The text of the older sūtra is different, but the intended meaning is slightly the same.
