Commentary: "Yoga" is here rendered as "correspondence": teaching and principle, mind and object, concentration and wisdom, cause and effect, medicine and disease, all mutually conforming; therefore, it is called correspondence. An "ācārya" is a practitioner who learns this correspondence. A master of yoga is called a "yogācārya". "Bhūmi" refers to the support; the place on which the master relies is called the "Yogācārabhūmi", which refers to the objects, practices, and fruits of the various dharmas of the three vehicles as appropriate. In order to put afflictions to rest, one brings forth these bhūmis. In the older sūtra text, it generally states that in order to be endowed with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor characteristics, mature sentient beings, and adorn the buddha-lands, one brings forth wondrous merit. The provisions of wondrous merit bring about the three fruits.
