Commentary: The fourth major section: Sudatta rejoices and makes an offering of necklaces and so forth. Within this are five parts: first, joyful giving; second, non-acceptance; third, offering again; fourth, accepting at last; fifth, obtaining benefits. This is the first text. A mind free from flatteries and deceptions is called pure joy. Dwelling in the humble secular state, being minor, one pays reverence, using material objects to express feelings. Undoing the necklace to show earnestness of heart, worth hundreds of thousands, thanking virtue and repaying kindness, he diligently made the offering.
