Commentary: Māra praises saṃsāra, fearing transcendence of the three realms; for the sake of sentient beings, I do not loathe or abandon it, and furthermore subdue him, making him follow in respectful obedience. Because I can constantly do so, I take Māra as an attendant. Non-Buddhists joyfully seek all evil views and also praise them. I seek the insight of wisdom, seeing and penetrating all dharmas, without loathing or abandoning them, and also transform them to follow in respectful obedience. Because I can constantly do so, non-Buddhists are my attendants. The older version says: 'not wavering in the midst of views.' Even when good views and evil views arise, not wavering in principle does not conflict with the meaning above. The doctrine of the Śūnyatā [school] says: Although one realizes the two emptinesses, reality is not destroyed; conforming to worldly convention, there are also attendants and the like. The doctrine of the Yukti [school] says: Although one knows that the imagined nature of tathatā is empty, in conditioned affairs there are not lacking attendants and the like; therefore there is illness.
