贊曰：自下第四問慰喻。有二：初問、後答。此問也。賓主對揚，遆相發起。上來客問主訖，故此主人問客。又主人之事，客人為能問；客人之事，主人問之。慰疾，客人之事，故無垢為問。慰者安。喻者曉。云何安慰曉喻病者？舊經乃是文殊為問、淨名為答，其義極乖，非文殊不解慰喻可以問他。

Commentary: From here below is the fourth [topic], asking about consolation. There are two parts: first the question, then the answer. This is the question. Host and guest engage in dialogue, mutually bringing forth [the Dharma]. Above, the guest finished questioning the host; therefore here the host questions the guest. Furthermore, regarding the host's affairs, the guest is the one who questions; regarding the guest's affairs, the host questions him. Consoling the sick is an affair of the guest, so Vimalakīrti asks. 'Console' (wei) means to comfort. 'Encourage' (yu) means to instruct. How does one comfort and instruct an ill person? In the older sūtra, Mañjuśrī asks and Vimalakīrti answers; its meaning is quite contrary, for it is not the case that Mañjuśrī did not understand consolation and needed to question another.
