Commentary: Below is the answer. There are two parts: first the answer, then the conclusion. In the answer there are ten statements: the first five advise what should be done without doing [the extreme], and the latter five advise doing what ought to be done. Or, the first five cause one to leave evil, and the latter five cause one to cultivate good. Here there are two aspects: The two vehicles demonstrate impermanence to encourage the wisdom that reduces [the body] to ashes and extinguishes [consciousness], loathing and abandoning the body. The bodhisattva is not so: demonstrating that the body is impermanent, one should generate revulsion, yet he encourages obtaining the eternal body that is adamantine and indestructible. The two vehicles demonstrate suffering to encourage delighting in nirvāṇa and entering eternal quiescence. The bodhisattva demonstrates suffering to cause one to relinquish the suffering body, but does not encourage entering quiescence, instead teaching and transforming sentient beings.
