The Commentary says: The fifth question and answer. The perspective of the Principle of Emptiness (Mādhyamika) states: In the ultimate truth, both the self and Nirvāṇa are equal, because their two natures are empty and devoid of substance. The perspective of the Principle of Reason (Yogācāra) states: The imagined self and Nirvāṇa are both equal, because the natures clung to by the deluded mind are both empty, not being true Nirvāṇa. Furthermore, their substances are non-existent, sharing the same non-existence as the falsely clung self, because Nirvāṇa is not that which is falsely clung to. If true Nirvāṇa were also that which is falsely clung to, toward what would all the noble ones proceed, and what would they realize? Furthermore, if that which is clung to were existent, it could be distinct from Nirvāṇa and called unequal; since that which is clung to is non-existent, it is not distinct from Nirvāṇa, and is therefore equal.
