贊曰：破自患中，上破有病、下破空病。有三：初乘前破有，以顯空義；次顯執空亦成大患；後勸住真，離有空病。此初文也。恐執非有，別有實空。今顯破執有故，假說為空。以假空名破執二實有，非空即實空。

The Commentary says: Within refuting one's own affliction, the above refuted the illness of existence, and below refutes the illness of emptiness. It comprises three parts: first, taking advantage of the preceding refutation of existence to reveal the meaning of emptiness; next, showing that clinging to emptiness also becomes a great affliction; and last, exhorting one to abide in reality and depart from the illnesses of both existence and emptiness. This is the first passage. For fear that one might cling to non-existence as another real emptiness, it now clarifies that in order to refute clinging to existence, it is provisionally designated as empty. By means of the provisional name of emptiness, it refutes clinging to the two as real existents, not that emptiness is itself a real emptiness.
