贊曰：下第二，無垢訶說。於中有四：一問鶖子、二鶖子反答、三無垢廣說、四時眾獲益。此初問也。由昔心念，我等今者為聞法故，二應相率，隨從詣彼。既不求座，故作此徵。

Commentary: Below is the second part: Vimalakīrti's rebuke and explanation. In it there are four: first, questioning Śāriputra; second, Śāriputra's reply; third, Vimalakīrti's detailed exposition; fourth, the assembly obtaining benefits. This is the first: questioning. Because of their former thought, "Now, for the sake of hearing the Dharma, we two should lead one another and follow each other in going there," since they did not come seeking seats, he poses this challenge.
