Commentary: Next, elucidating through similes. There are two similes: first, clarifying that great power can oppress; second, clarifying that matching power can oppress. This is the first passage. Those prior to the seventh bhūmi who act as great beggars are like fireflies: because their stage is low, they cannot oppress. The bodhisattvas of great giving are like the solar disc, because their august power is immense. Only bodhisattvas of the eighth bhūmi and above who are established in vimokṣa can act as great beggars and carry out such oppression, because their awe-inspiring power is great; and only they can perform great giving, which is beyond the capacity of earlier stages.
