Commentary: Fourth, resolving [the objection]. There are three parts: first, personally practising those practices; next, expounding the Dharma in response to them; and last, explaining the various doubts and objections. This is the first passage, which is not in the older translation of the sūtra. As for the Śrāvaka, there are two [meanings]: first, as explained in the second [chapter] of the Lotus Sūtra, hearing the Dharma and faithfully accepting it; second, in the 'Belief and Understanding' chapter, causing them to hear by means of the path. Here, following the latter meaning, they are called Śrāvakas. Because they naturally and directly realize the true nature of phenomena, do not rely on another's instruction, and delight in dwelling alone in tranquil silence, they are called Pratyekabuddhas (Solitary Realizers). Without speaking of awakening arising in dependence on conditions, they are also called Pratyekabuddhas (Condition-Realizers). Because they do not part from loving-kindness and compassion, they are Mahāyāna.
