The five chapters from the Chapter on Upāya downward concern the superior practices of benefiting others. The immediately preceding chapter observes the places of conversion. The following two chapters pertain to the locus of real meaning, clarifying the practice of benefiting oneself: the first chapter concerns the practices of real, conditioned worldly affairs; the following chapter concerns the practices of real, unconditioned supramundane principle. This is because after benefiting others, one must necessarily benefit oneself, and wishing to realize its principle, one first cultivates affairs. Bodhi is the fruit of awakening; "parts" (aids) means the causes: the practices of the causal stages for attaining the Buddha's bodhi. Now, explaining these extensively, it is titled "Aids to Awakening (bodhipakṣa)," not referring merely to the thirty-seven bodhipakṣa-dharmas.
