Commentary: The second is the answer. That to which ordinary beings return is called a destination (gati). That to which the noble ones return is not the destination of ordinary beings. Traveling through this non-destination is called practicing the non-destinations. Alternatively, destination has two meanings: that which is reached is called destination, namely, the dharmas of the Buddha-fruit; that which can reach it is the non-destination, which is the aids to awakening. Now, cultivating the aids to awakening can reach it, and therefore he says "practicing the non-destinations." Practicing these non-destinations, one is able to arrive at the ultimate destination. The older [translation] says "practicing non-ways"; "way" means destination, like the five destinations (pañcagati) and so forth.
