贊曰：自下第二，無垢發問，便明如來之種。有四：一問、二答、三徵、四釋。此問也。種者因，性者類。佛因體類，名如來種性。

Commentary: From here on is the second section: Vimalakīrti asks a question, thereby clarifying the lineage (gotra) of the Tathāgata. There are four parts: first, the question; second, the answer; third, the interrogation; fourth, the explanation. This is the question. "Seed" (dhātu/bīja) means cause; "lineage" (gotra/svabhāva) means category. The causal substance and category of the Buddha is called the Tathāgata lineage (tathāgatagotra).
