5.57

贊曰：此解方便。二乘知身及疾生滅，求畢竟滅，永入涅槃，名無方便。菩薩不然，不求永滅，故有方便。慧皆二乘有，異生所無；方便二乘無，皆唯菩薩有。

Commentary: This explains upāya. The two vehicles know the arising and ceasing of body and illness, and seek their ultimate cessation, entering permanently into Nirvāṇa; this is called lacking upāya. The bodhisattva is not so; not seeking permanent cessation, they thus possess upāya. Wisdom is possessed by all two vehicles and absent in ordinary beings; upāya is absent in the two vehicles and possessed solely by bodhisattvas.
