5.583

贊曰：合也。二乘如原，不能生故；煩惱如泥，能生花故。由惑覆理，理顯道生，道如花故。煩惱礙智，斷之智生，智如花故。由起煩惱，利樂眾生，增長智慧，慧如花故。

The commentary says: This is the application. The two vehicles are like the highland, because they cannot produce [it]; the afflictions are like the mud, because they can produce the flower. Because delusion covers the principle, when the principle is revealed the path arises, for the path is like the flower. The afflictions obstruct wisdom, and when they are severed wisdom arises, for wisdom is like the flower. By generating afflictions, one benefits and brings joy to sentient beings and augments wisdom, for wisdom is like the flower.
