Commentary: The third section below has ten clauses, showing the evil causes and effects of the ten unwholesome paths of karma. These are the three bodily evils. Taking what is not given was formerly called "stealing"; it is not only open robbery and stealthy theft that are named this transgression. Here it is revealed that with regard to any worldly object, if another's mind does not give it and one takes it by force, it is entirely this transgression, hence it is called "taking what is not given." As for "sexual misconduct," desire means greedy craving, showing that at the moment of culmination it is entirely greedy craving. It must involve what is not one's own; and even if it is one's own, if it is at the wrong time, wrong place, wrong measure, or wrong manner, it also constitutes a path of karma. Deviating from what is one's own is not a path of karma, hence it is called "misconduct."
