Commentary: Below, raising praise. First, praising the Tathāgata; next, praising the bodhisattvas. 'Śākya' means able, which is the Buddha's clan name; 'muni' has the meaning of tranquility. Being able to be silent and tranquil in the face of the various evils of saṃsāra, he is thus called 'Able in Tranquility' (Śākyamuni). Śākya is the clan name. Gautama is the lineage name; here it is translated as 'sun-baked' and is also called 'sugar cane'. It is like a person whose surname is Lu, being of the Lu clan descended from ghosts: this Lu is to be revered, whereas other Lus are not. If one has the surname Śākya, it is the Gautama Śākyas: this Śākya is to be revered, whereas other Śākyas are not. The narrative of this original cause is as explained in another chapter. The true virtues of the Śākya [Buddha] are praised endlessly. Because he manifests as an inferior birth, it is called 'concealed'. Extremely evil sentient beings are therefore called 'low and inferior'. Being devoid of the wealth of the noble Dharma, they are therefore called 'destitute'. Taming cuts off evil; gathering and benefiting gives goodness.
