Commentary: 'Arrogance' (mada) means intoxicated laxity, giving free rein to body and mind. 'Conceit' (māna) means haughtiness, exalting oneself and looking down upon others. There are seven kinds of arrogance: arrogance of health, arrogance of youth, arrogance of long life, arrogance of caste, arrogance of physical strength, arrogance of wealth and status, and arrogance of erudition. There are also seven conceits: 1. conceit, which means reckoning oneself superior to the inferior or equal to the superior; 2. excessive conceit, which means reckoning oneself equal to the superior and superior to the equal; 3. conceit beyond conceit, which means reckoning oneself superior to the superior; 4. 'I'-conceit, which means holding oneself high based on self; 5. conceit of superiority, claiming to have attained much when one has attained little; 6. conceit of inferiority, when another is far superior, reckoning oneself to be only slightly inferior; 7. perverse conceit, having no virtue at all, yet reckoning oneself to have virtue. Formerly, due to internal arrogance, one gave rise externally to conceit, thereby sinking into saṃsāra; now one should eliminate them and revere others as the Buddha.
