Commentary: Paying homage upon arrival. There are three parts: first, Vimalakīrti's homage; second, the bodhisattvas' homage; third, the great assembly's homage. This is the first. Having placed the assembly on the ground, he himself bowed in homage to the Bhagavat; having circumambulated him, he stepped back and stood respectfully. Bowing with the crown of the head and bending the five wheels expresses taking refuge in the Honored One; circumambulating clockwise models the six abhijñās and manifests transformations; seven circumambulations extinguish the seven anuśayas, obtain the seven limbs of awakening (bodhyaṅga), and accomplish the seven purities; facing the Buddha, one attains the ground of all-knowledge (sarvajñatā-bhūmi) and attains the single marklessness; clasping the hands symbolizes merging with the true realm. Standing respectfully, he receives the Buddha's gracious instruction.
