贊曰：第三世尊指詰。為四：一佛問、二彼答、三重徵、四彼述。此初文也。無垢大士住解脫位，由此第一，名最勝智。任運能現，名為自在。妙用無礙，名神力為。

Commentary: Third, the Bhagavat pointing out and questioning. There are four parts: 1. the Buddha's question, 2. his answer, 3. questioning again, 4. his explanation. This is the first text. The Great Being Vimalakīrti abides in the stage of liberation; because this is foremost, it is called 'most supreme knowledge'. Being able to manifest it spontaneously is called 'mastery'. The wondrous functioning being unobstructed is called 'worked by supernatural power'.
