Commentary: Second, specific elucidation. There are two parts: first, elucidating the attainment of the Śrāvaka; second, elucidating the attainment of the bodhisattva. Among the Śrāvakas there are three; this is proceeding from an ordinary person to seeing the truths (darśanamārga). 'Venerable' (āyuṣmat) was previously translated as 'wise-life' (huiming), addressing Ānanda as 'Venerable'. Sentient beings in the world mostly cherish life; hearing the mention of long life, who would not rejoice? Renunciants mostly cherish wisdom; hearing the mention of wisdom, who would not be delighted? Just as secular people cherish life, the old sūtras therefore addressed them as 'wise-life'. 'Longevity' is life; possessing worldly life and possessing supramundane life of wisdom, neither should be uniquely emphasized, so both are addressed together, commonly called 'Venerable' (āyuṣmat). Having given rise to the aspiration of a Śrāvaka but not yet entered the seeing of the truths, having eaten, one must enter it, and only then is it digested: at the fastest, three lives; at the slowest, sixty eons. 'Realization of the correctness of the noble path' (samyaktva-niyāma-avakrānti) has the meaning explained previously.
