Commentary: This is replying with silence. The meaning of silence has four aspects: first, food is used to treat guests, and guests should not go; Mañjuśrī found it strange that he asked the guests, and caused them all to remain silent. Second, great beings seek the Dharma and do not scheme for material food; although he inquired, Mañjuśrī caused them to remain silent. Third, to show that the bodhisattvas have no attachment to food, he caused all to remain silent, manifesting this deep principle. Fourth, to manifest Vimalakīrti's supernormal sovereignty and display it to the bodhisattvas, leading them to look up with admiration.
