6.334

贊曰：四阿難謙退。初謙退、後佛止。此初也。於此三義：久聽不知、昔號多聞、今成少識。故今謙退，不敢福第一。

The Commentary says: Fourth is Ānanda's modesty and retreat. First is modesty and retreat, and afterwards the Buddha stops him. This is the first [part]. Regarding these three meanings: having listened for a long time without knowing, formerly called 'foremost in having heard much', and now becoming one of little knowledge. Therefore he now modestly steps back, not daring to claim to be foremost in merit.
